Exact Consecutive Cyclic-Stack Fibres

Abstract

The consecutive cyclic [123] stack has the exact even and odd fibres conjectured by Zhan and Bie.

The stack is top-first. For each incoming value, it repeatedly pops the top entry exactly when the incoming value and the top two stack entries form one of the consecutive patterns 123, 231, or 312, then pushes the incoming value. The residual stack is flushed top-first. This literal convention maps 3124 to 4213, as in Figure 3 of the source.

Commentary.

For m at least two, fibre(n) is the complete list of permutations of 1 through n whose output is (1,…,floor(n/2),n,…,floor(n/2)+1). The two conjuncts therefore cover every n at least four: the even fibre has one element, and the odd fibre has m+1 elements, equal to ceiling(n/2). The proof classifies every successful input rather than only constructing the displayed number of witnesses. Zhan and Bie state these counts as Conjectures 3 and 4; the inverse classification and proof here are repository-derived.

Write m=floor(n/2), and call entries at most m low and the remaining entries high. Every successful input starts high and has at most one low after each high. The target order forbids a high from being output before a low that remains to be output. This barrier forces the lows to occur as 1,…,m. In even size all high gaps are filled, forcing the highs to increase. In odd size exactly one gap is empty. If it is the final gap, the filled-gap argument still orders the highs; otherwise the input ends low, and the final stack invariant identifies the same increasing high range.

Thus the even input is (m+1,1,m+2,2,…,2m,m). In odd size, start with highs m+1,…,2m+1, omit one of their m+1 following gaps, and place lows 1,…,m in the other gaps in order. These words all produce the target, and the omitted gap is recoverable from the word, so they are distinct. The converse above exhausts the full permutation fibre.
