Local-unitary inequivalence of two weight-isometric pairs of stabilizer codes

Abstract

Neither the two [[5,2]] codespaces of S_A and S_B nor the two [[6,3]] codespaces of S+ and S- of Theorem 5.3 of arXiv:2607.26214 are related by a product unitary composed with a qubit permutation, which answers the first part of Question 5.4 of A. A. Mahmoud in the negative.

Commentary.

Some product of five unitary two-by-two matrices, composed with a permutation of the five qubits, maps the codespace of S_A onto that of S_B; or some product of six unitary matrices, composed with a permutation of the six qubits, maps the codespace of S+ onto that of S-. Question 5.4 asks whether this holds.

Commentary.

For a set T of qubits and a subspace C, let V_T(C) be the span of all M psi with psi in C and M a product operator that is the identity on the qubits of T; V_T(C) is the whole space exactly when the reduced state of C on T has full rank. If W is a product of invertible matrices composed with a qubit permutation sigma, conjugating by W turns a product operator that is the identity on T into one that is the identity on sigma(T), so W maps V_T(C) into V_sigma(T)(W C); applied to W and to its inverse, this shows that T is full for C exactly when sigma(T) is full for W C. If a word fixing C is supported in T and has an X or a Y, it commutes with every product operator that is the identity on T, so it fixes V_T(C), which then misses the basis vector 0…0: T is not full. This makes {0,2,3} and {1,2,3} not full for S_B (the words XIZXI and IXXYI), and {0,1,2,3}, {0,1,4,5}, {2,3,4,5} not full for S+ (XXXXII, XXIIXX, IIXXXX). If a word n commutes with the generators, it maps C into C, and V_T(C) is invariant under the part of n on T; when these parts include X_j and Z_j for every j in T, V_T(C) is invariant under every product operator, and being nonzero it contains every basis vector. Tables of such words, checked by the kernel, make every triple other than {0,1,4} and {2,3,4} full for S_A and every set of four qubits other than {0,1,2,3} full for S-; the codespaces of S_A and S+ contain the indicator of the bit strings with x_0 = x_1, x_2 = x_3 and x_4 = x_0 + x_2, and S- is nonzero because it is the image of S+. For the first pair the preimages of {0,2,3} and {1,2,3} under sigma must then be {0,1,4} and {2,3,4}, but the first two share two qubits and the last two share one. For the second pair the images of {0,1,2,3}, {0,1,4,5} and {2,3,4,5} are three different sets of four qubits that are not full for S-, which has only one.
