Definition 2.1
Page 3: “For any graph and a fixed vertex , a set is an -position set if for any no vertex of lies on any -geodesic in .”
Page 3: “The -position number of is defined to be the maximum cardinality of an -position set and is denoted by or simply .”
Page 3: “The maximum value of among all vertices of is called the upper vertex position number (or simply the vertex position number) of .”
Pages 3–4: “Similarly, the minimum value of among all vertices of is called the minimum vertex position number of .”
A geodesic includes its endpoints. Thus is an -position set, but a connected graph has no -position set of size at least two containing . The Lean predicates retain this convention, quantify over every shortest walk and take the finite supremum over every subset of the vertex carrier.
Problem 2.4
Page 5: “Is the ratio bounded for connected graphs?”
Lemma 2.3, page 5, gives a family for with and . Its ratios approach six. This is a family of examples, not a universal upper bound. The authors’ survey, “General position problems in graphs”, arXiv:2501.19385v5, lists the boundedness question among its open problems.
Refutation mechanism
The Lean result constructs connected graphs for every . From one hub every shortest ray contributes at most one vertex to a position set, giving an upper bound . From another vertex, vertices lie on one sphere and hence form a position set. The resulting lower bound on the ratio is unbounded. The source’s separately stated degree, eccentricity and graph-class bounds retain their stated scopes; no replacement universal upper bound is asserted.
