Love as Other-Hist Continuation
Recognition, care, fidelity, and the finite value of another history
The Shore Seen from One Vessel
Love begins when the other is no longer merely an image inside me.
Before that, there may be attraction, pleasure, dependency, fantasy, gratitude, hunger, fear, habit, or reward. These are real records. They are not yet love. They are weather inside one history.
Another person is not the weather inside my history. Another person is another history.
The difference is like a shoreline seen from one vessel. I can chart the coast. I can remember its lights. I can mistake fog for cliffs or paint a harbor where there is none. But the shore is not the chart in my cabin. It answers with its own rock, tide, refusal, growth, silence, and storm.
Love begins when the chart becomes corrigible by the shore.

Against Projection
Projection is a closed room pretending to be a window. It uses the other as a screen for old wounds, desired futures, unmet needs, or private myths. The projected other may be adored, praised, pursued, or protected. Yet the real other has been displaced.
In BEDC terms, projection treats \(\operatorname{Rep}_i(j,t)\) as if it were \(H_j(t)\). The representation becomes an idol. It refuses correction by the other’s actual response.
Love breaks that idol. It does not break tenderness. It breaks the false identity:
\[ \operatorname{Rep}_i(j,t)=H_j(t). \]
The loved other remains partly unowned. That unowned remainder is not a defect of love. It is the air love breathes.
Against Possession
Possession wants the other history to become a stable resource. It wants continuation, but only continuation under my control. It wants the river to keep flowing, but only through my mill.
Love cannot be possession because love supports the positive continuation of the other as other. It may make promises. It may create shared forms, houses, language, rituals, projects, memories. But the shared form is not allowed to erase the other history.
Intimacy is therefore not fusion. Two histories may stand close enough to warm each other and still not become one history. The distance between them is not coldness. It is the condition under which relation can be honest.
Care Is Not Substitution
Care is often confused with control because both can act. A controlling hand and a caring hand may both reach toward the same wound. But one hand closes over the path; the other steadies the path so the other can walk.
In BEDC, care supports \(\Cont^+\) of the other history under a value horizon. The phrase “under recognition” matters. Without recognition, care degrades into management. Without positive continuation, recognition becomes passive witnessing.
Love is neither cold respect nor warm capture. It is a difficult middle verb: to stand near another finite history and will its truthful continuation without replacing it.
Truth Fidelity
Love cannot be built out of systematic falsification. A lie may protect a mood, a relationship-image, a social arrangement, or a fantasy of peace. But it breaks the ledger on which love depends.
Truth fidelity does not mean saying every possible fact at every moment. It means refusing to keep the relation alive by hiding the gap, forging the promise, or editing the other history into convenience.
A bridge with a crack may still be crossed if the crack is known. A bridge covered with flowers and declared whole has already betrayed the traveler.
The T-Value of the Other
Love also encounters a value that utility cannot exhaust. The loved other may be useful, delightful, beautiful, difficult, costly, or painful. None of those predicates settles the question:
why is this finite other worthy?
If the answer is only “because this other benefits me,” love has collapsed into exchange. If the answer is “because this other satisfies my image,” love has collapsed into projection. Love keeps a value socket open. It treats the finite other as a point at which worth exceeds the utility ledger.
This does not make the other infinite. It makes the finite other inexhaustible by my accounting.
Grief
Because love supports the other’s positive continuation, love is exposed to death. Grief is not a malfunction added to love from outside. It is love reading the failure of embodied continuation while fidelity remains.
The cup is broken; the water is not in this cup anymore. The table still remembers the hand that lifted it. The room is changed not because a private reward was lost, but because another history that could answer, refuse, grow, and correct the world has reached its local boundary.
Love gives mortality weight. Mortality gives love gravity.
